The Medical Marijuana Program (MMP) was established by the California Department of Health Services in 2004 to facilitate the registration of qualified patients and their caregivers, through a statewide identification system. Participation in the program is voluntary for patients and the patient’s primary caregiver. Through their county of residence, qualified patients and their caregivers may apply for and be issued an identification card. This card is used to verify those patients and caregivers that have authorization to possess, grow, transport and/or use medical marijuana in California. The I.D. card, however, can only be obtained if the patient has a current medical marijuana recommendation from a State licensed physician.

There are two ways to obtain an I.D. card. If you would like a State I.D. card, will be issued to through your county. You MUST be a resident of that county in order to be served. See county-by-county list below.

If you do not want to get a State issued I.D. card, you may also get a card from the OCBC. The OCBC serves anyone as long you are a California resident. This card is NOT a State I.D. card, (the OCBC is an independent, non-profit business established to provide an alternative to the State ID Card,) but it does act as a verification of your physicians' recommendation and is recognized throughout the Bay Area.
